December/End of Year 2025

And so we wrap another year of adventuring. Boy has it been a ride!

December

We had a very long and busy month. Our first weekend was spent on a quick trip back to Tennessee for Santa photos with Bri and a visit to Nashville for Zoolumination.

Oh how we love Bri and Santa Scott time!
Baby Girl was busy but didn’t have a cow.
Little Man was a little standoffish which is not normal for him…
Love this candid moment.
Santa Scott is the best.

Pegasus/unicorn was beautiful
My favorite displays are on the reflecting lake.

We even went back to our usual Home Depot in Clarksville for workshop day so Little Man got to do his project and we didn’t even sign up. I’m thinking it’s a Lincoln HD issue…

We were all still battling chest/nose colds for most of the month so we tried to keep things pretty low-key the following week.

Little Man had his Christmas/Holiday Program at school.

He actually sang, though he wasn’t very enthusiastic about it.
I’m not sure he could find us in the crowd, so he wasn’t as bubbly.
Baby Girl and Little Man all dressed up.
Cheesing by the tree inside the door.

That weekend, Little Man got to see Santa again, this time at church.

He didn’t want to sit on this one’s lap, but he was keen to talk.

The next week, Little Man started his winter break and Baby Girl got her flue shot booster. Once again, she only cried when held down.

Such a happy girl!

Mid-week, we drove through Crystal Springs to see the different light displays various businesses/groups put up. Unfortunately, the wind really caused trouble for a lot of the less sturdy displays.

Santa dinosaur was pretty cool, but it was impossible to get a decent photo from the car.

We wrapped up the weekend with a Lowes project and had to snap some silly photos in their huge display sleigh.

Mild weather for December was most appreciated.

And, since I didn’t buy one this year (I don’t trust Kirby/my own cats not to poison themselves), we took a few snaps in their poinsettia display.

It’s a miracle she didn’t immediately put these in her mouth.
After seeing sissy get her photo, Little Man thought he needed his own. Thank goodness he gave a real smile.

The next week was Christmas, so naturally, we were extra busy!

Daddy and Little Man did their last minute shopping.

Little Man asked Daddy to take a picture in front of the huge Christmas tree at Southpointe.

Then we attended Little Man’s Christmas program/candlelight service at church. Originally, Little Man wasn’t going to do it, but decided the week before that he would.

The children’s director really did great keeping almost everyone on task (a huge feat with some of these kids!).
He was the cutest little shepherd.
My boys. 💚

Despite not having our own tree, we still took our matching jammies photo.

As usual, the dogs didn’t cooperate all that well. At least we got one with all the humans looking.
Baby Girl’s first Christmas.

We celebrated our first Christmas back in the Midwest and everyone was thoroughly spoiled. That afternoon, we had another mini Christmas my Aunt Lindsey and Uncle Darrell.

Mommy needs to reign it in. 🫣

Opening gifts from Aunt Whitney and Uncle Bryan.

A few nights later, we went to Omaha to check out their Zoolightful lantern displays with Aunt Lindsey and Uncle Darrell. It was not as exciting as Zoolumination, but they had a few really nice displays. Hopefully, they actually look at feedback and can make some adjustments to make it better next year.

Beautiful ribbon tree!
Love the entry tunnel.
This guy had the best antlers.
Despite the terrifyingly creepy snake, this was a fabulous display.
Enjoying the gingerbread house lights up close

While there, Little Man worked up the courage to see the Grinch. He was excited while we stood in line but actually seeing him was a bit iffy.

He wasn’t sure once it was his turn.

The last little bit of the month was spent with a little less running around. We saw Grammys for her 91st birthday/a belated Christmas and met Lindsey for lunch.

Baby Girl loves her new little plush farm.
Little Man is excited to learn how to properly yo-yo.

End of Year

We have had such an eventful year. We started off as a family of 3 in Tennessee and ended with a family of 4 in Nebraska.

We had so many wonderful adventures. From finishing preschool and starting kindergarten and Cub Scouts, to bringing home Baby Girl and having her *this* close to crawling and showing off her two new teeth.

We attended some family favorites with the Great Spring Art Hop and Zoolumination and got to see the Savannah Bananas play Bananaball in Nashville.  We went to the Omaha Zoo, attended several (new) community events, and did a whole lot of Cub Scout adventuring.

We packed up our whole life and moved back to the Midwest and said our final goodbye to our Army days. We sold our house, paid off all of our debt, and started a brand new school.

We said a heartbreaking goodbye to Gramps and had a new furry friend adopt Nana and Grandad.

We are all looking forward to this new year. We’re anticipating many changes (new home/ a bigger vehicle for sure) and have high hopes for new adventures.

Until then,

November 2025

Wow what a month.

Home Depot let us down again at the beginning of the month and we had some crappy winter weather at the end of the month so we didn’t get to do projects at all. We’ll have to wait until January to try again since we’ll be back in Clarksville for December’s project. But that didn’t stop us from keeping busy.

The whole Waid clan has been coughing for the entire month now. Little Man started before the camp out at the end of October and the Mister started a few days later. Then it was Baby Girl’s turn, and finally…it came for me. None of us have/had fevers or any other symptoms than runny/stuffy noses and phlegmy coughs. Anything we can, erm, expell, is clear.

Little Man’s started to get bark-y so we hit up urgent care. Unfortunately, the doctor said we just have to let it run its course. She did give him an albuterol nebulizer to try and we’re running humidifiers all night, but so far, nothing is kicking this. It’s beyond annoying and I’m over it. My poor nose is running off my face and I should have abs of steel for all my coughing.

We weren’t the only ones hitting the doctor this month. Roxie had a vet appointment for her bordetella booster (which turns out is only given once a year here, as kennel cough isn’t very prevalent) and since no one in the area gives ProHeart injections, we got her switched to a flea/tick/heartworm prevention pill until we’re able to get the flea/tick injection (it’s brand new so we have to wait for the new clinic to get it).

The next weekend, Little Man (and daddy) helped at the Veteran’s Day presentation with the local American Legion for scouts. He earned one of his community loops and a special bullet casing award for attending. He even got to carry the Lion flag for a little bit (the wind was terrible so it was short-lived but he did great).

Carrying the flag.
Bullet casing award from our pack committee chair.
He was so proud of himself.

SCC had a Family Science Night and, of course, Little Man LOVED it.

Love the little lab coat.
They had so many cool experiments to try but it’s hard to top the electricity ball.

Later that week, we saw some of the northern lights. There’s so much less light pollution here than in Clarksville; we were able to really see the colors with our phone cameras.

Even caught some stars.
Mom and I drove out to the cemetery to try to see more the next night. Not much luck.

That weekend, we had a full pack meeting to present awards for the first half of scouting.

Little Man is up to 4 of the 6 he needs to move on to the next den already.

Most of the Lion den.

Then, it was time for Baby Girl’s 6 month check-up and vaccines. She’s weighing in at 16lbs 11oz (57th percentile) and is 26 3/4 inches long (81st percentile). She also has two bottom teeth popped through and has zero issues sitting up like a big girl.

Little chompers.

She cried for all of 5 seconds after her vaccines (she got boosters for DTaP, Hib, PCV, and polio, plus the flu shot and a rotavirus oral dose). We opted to come back the following week for her RSV shot since she’s been battling a phlegmy cough — like the rest of the house ALL month.

That weekend, it was time to kick off the holiday season early with some handprint ornaments at Pocketful of Posies.

Little Man was an old pro.
Baby Girl wasn’t sure what to think of it all.

Then we went to the annual courthouse lighting in Beatrice. For as long as I’ve lived in the area, I’ve never actually attended until we came back.

Courthouse all lit up.
It was a little chilly and Baby Girl pooped through her long sleeve outfit, so she had to be bundled under my coat in the carrier.

Finally, we celebrated Thanksgiving. We had a pretty full house, even though my sisters and brother-in-laws couldn’t make it. One of mom’s coworkers and her husband came, as well as my cousin Lance, and our friend Casey.

Baby Girl showed off her sitting skills and tried a few bites of everything for the first time. She wasn’t too sure about it but was very eager to do it herself.

Such a cute outfit (too bad you can’t see the little turkeys on the pockets of the dress).

That weekend, we were supposed to go to Grandad’s basketball game, but snow blew in (literally!) and had us staying home.

The dogs had fun playing in the powder, but weren’t impressed with the cold temperatures. Big Tennessee weenies…
All dressed up for the game.
The table has become a great place to show off how we sit so big!

December is probably going to be busy as usual. Indie has a vet appointment, we’re meeting the speech therapist at Little Man’s school to get his IEP sorted (don’t get me started on why it took so damn long to get a meeting…I’m a bit salty about it), and we’re driving back to Tennessee for our annual Santa Scott photos with Briana and seeing the lanterns at the zoo again. And that’s just the first week of the month!

There will be scout things, basketball games, Christmas festivities, and more. Boy, do I need to start/finish my shopping…

Here’s to hoping we all feel better by New Year’s!

Until then,

October 2025

What a month!

Fall has officially come to Nebraska and that means misty rain and chilly temps. But that didn’t stop our outings.

Home Depot was out of projects again this month (why bother having a sign up page if you’re not going to keep any on hand?), so that was frustrating. If we miss out again in November I think we’ll be done trying to come to town for it — it’s going to be an excavator which Little Man will adore. We might try a different location but this has been frustrating.

Despite the rocky start, we have had a great month. Busy as ever (maybe a little too busy).

Little Man had his first school field trip. He got to ride the school bus and Mommy, Daddy, and Baby Girl got to drive up to spend the day with him at Roca Scary Farm. Thankfully the weather was beautiful, but man has Roca grown since I went last.

Hayrack ride to the pick your own pumpkin patch.
Baby Girl was loving the huge pumpkins.

Then we got to meet Aunt Lindsey and Uncle Darrell’s new puppy.

Meet Mac.

The following weekend was the Cub Scouts Day of Awesomeness at our council’s outdoor learning area. The wind was very chilly and the sun didn’t come out until after we finished. That didn’t stop Little Man from having a blast with other scouts.

He got to try out the archery range.
Giant bubbles were probably his favorite.
Box Car Racing
Rain Gutter Regata

Then the Mister, Baby Girl, and I took the long drive back to Clarksville one last time. We had to stay on post the first night because the lock box code the realtor gave us didn’t work. I was furious! And had zero qualms about trying to call him at 2am…he didn’t answer of course. But, despite the hiccup, we had an uneventful rest of the long weekend.  I got to see my friend Kimberly and had one last Mugsy’s coffee. We picked up Little Man’s swing set and my house plants/my ceramic planters before heading back to Nebraska.

Apparently they didn’t mind the heat or lack of water. The cactuses were a little sunburned but they are all putting off blooms already (early!) and my African violet and Norfolk pine are bouncing back. We only lost one and it was already struggling before the Mister put them outside.

I can’t say the same about my left over outdoor annuals. My poor evergreens both were nothing but crispy twigs and dry needles and my mum and dianthus were toast. It must have really gotten hot and dry. Weird how that works out.

The short following week, Baby Girl decided she prefers trying to sit up on her own, so we brought out the Bumbo from Cousin Lance and let her sit on the island while we cooked dinner.

Quite pleased with herself

Then the Mister and I went to an estate sale with a bunch of pre-WW2 German pieces. I was so excited with my finds and only spent $10 on a handful of things, including the stein.

I was quite pleased with myself knowing what this said with my limited knowledge of the German language. “In Heaven there is no beer, that’s why we drink it here.”

That weekend, we had an Lowes project and took a family outing to a smaller pumpkin patch: Bloom Farm. This was more our speed, which was great since the weather took a turn and was gloomy, windy, and chilly!

Despite the cool weather, Little Man enjoyed being a goof ball.
Baby Girl wasn’t sure what to think of the corn box.
Hey look! I’m in a photo.
Naturally we had try to get everyone to look…
Baby Girl wouldn’t keep her shoes on and Little Man was acting silly all day.

While it wasn’t Gentry Farm, it was a welcome change of pace. We even had caramel apple nachos which were perfection.

The next week brought the official end to our Clarksville era. We said our final goodbye to our home on the 22nd. While I was sad to see her go (mostly just leaving behind friends and special memories), it was freeing to be done with the whole selling process (not to mention being able to pay off our largest debts with the profit).

The end of the week featured the Night of the Great Pumpkin in Beatrice. It was most of the downtown businesses handing out candy. It was good practice for Halloween for these two.

Successful haul.

The kids even participated in a costume contest. We didn’t win anything but they sure were cute.

Sonic the Hedgehog
The cutest tiny Ms. Rachel in my opinion.

That weekend, the boys went on their first camping trip for Scouts at Indian Cave State Park. It rained and was cold all weekend, but they toughed it out and had fun.

They had to wear beanie hats to bed and thermals underneath their uniforms. Talk about roughing it!
Despite the poopy weather, these two enjoyed themselves while Baby Girl and I stayed home.

We kept the busy weekend going and also attended Trunk or Treat at our local church.

Once again, it was very chilly but that didn’t stop us.
Such a cute frame!
No Ms. Rachel this time, but she rocked a very familiar dinosaur beanie.

The last week of October was a short one at school. Report cards came home and Little Man is doing well. He has some reading things to work on, but he seems to be on track. We were finally contacted by the school’s speech therapist, so hopefully soon, he’ll be back to speech twice a week to work on more sound pronunciation. I’m glad he’ll have it through school instead of having to work out how to get him to/from a private office.

We wrapped up the month with Trunk or Treating on Main Street of the town next to us, pumpkin carving, and one more round of trick or treating in town.

November starts off hot with what will hopefully be a successful Home Depot workshop, followed by the chaos that starts the end of the year wind down.

We’ll have Baby Girl’s 6 month check-up. Hopefully we’ll hit all the milestones and get the green light for starting on real food.

She’s got this sitting up thing down.

Scouts should be calmer now that popcorn sales are over and the Mister won’t be attending his disc golf tournament in Texas this year (despite me telling him he should go). So we’ll have Thanksgiving and hopefully we can start nailing down our budget so we can really hunt for our next home.

I for one am looking forward to less running around. I feel like since we got to Nebraska, we’ve been going full tilt and the holidays are right around the corner. We’ll see if we can pump the brakes a bit. Wish me luck.

Until then,

September 2025

One month closer to the end of the year.

September has been hectic, long, and a bit overwhelming.

The 1st marked another heavenly birthday for our Audie boy.

We went to our usual workshops, with Home Depot running out of their monthly kit. We’ll know to go earlier next month because Little Man was really looking forward to the crop duster plane. Luckily, I found one in eBay so he still gets his pin and can do his project…just not for free.

He did get to spend some time with Aunt Lindsey and helped her pick some veggies from her garden, so not a wasted trip to town.

We received Little Man’s school photos back and wow, does he look grown up!

Kindergarten school photo

He also started Cub Scouts in earnest and has spent almost every weekend doing popcorn sales (and killing it!). Next month will bring his first camp out and Cub Scout Day of Awesomeness.

He was also invited to his first classmate birthday party at a recreational area nearby. He was the only classmate to come (which the birthday girl didn’t seem to mind), but despite that, it was a great afternoon.

The next week had a Grandparent’s Day lunch at school so Nana and Grandad got to eat with Little Man. He was so excited.

Baby Girl had her 4 month check up/vaccines. She is now in the 71st percentile weighing 15 lbs 5.6oz and measuring 25inches long. She is growing so fast and her personality is really starting to shine through.

She has discovered her toes.
She is a happy girl, especially in the mornings and she loves to babble

She is slowly learning to control her hands and is working on her gnawing (those gums are rock hard and I’m positive we’ll have teeth pop through soon).

Unfortunately, Gramps hadn’t been doing well with his cancer treatments and was very weak, so it was time to go to Good Samaritan for some assistance. We visited when we could (we had a whole slew of car troubles with the Dart – 2 new tires in one week and the blower motor has crapped out). He got a real kick out of the scout uniform.

Since Grammys wasn’t used to spending her evenings alone, mom and I went with her to see The Odd Couple play. It was a nice excuse to put on real clothes and get out of the house without kids for an evening.

Sadly, my wonderful Gramps passed away less than a week later. It was a hard blow for the family. I could write a whole post about him and maybe still will, but it’s too much to dwell on right now.

He was given his military honors and had his drumsticks displayed.

Despite the sorrow and heaviness mid-month, we did have a few uplifting moments in the latter weeks.

We accepted an offer on our house in Clarksville. The appraisal and inspections just finished up and we made all the adjustments we needed to, so now we are just waiting to close on October 22. We are ready to be done with that particular chapter for sure.

A new furry friend showed up at mom and dad’s and we’ve been trying hard to keep him safely near the house.

Meet Kirby.

He’s a sweet young boy who has settled on the deck nicely. Dad says he’s not coming inside but I think if mom has anything to say about it, he’ll be vetted/neutered and indoors by the time it gets cold.

Little Man had parent teacher conferences (he’s doing great at school and seems to be thriving), so he had a couple of weekdays off. We took the opportunity to go to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha when it wasn’t so crowded.

Touch tank at the aquarium – so brave!
Waterfall photo in the jungle with daddy.
Baby Girl LOVED the aquarium, especially the jellies.
I couldn’t believe it. He actually wanted to hold her while he took over her stroller.

We capped off the weekend/month with a fall festival. There was a car show, vendors, and a chili cook-off. Too bad the fall weather hadn’t started yet – it was a little hot.

September 30 brought an official end of the Mister’s military career. As of October 1st, he is retired from service and will get to start civilian life for the first time in over 21 years. So new retired IDs will be acquired.

While September felt chaotic and heavy, I am hopeful for a lighter, less hectic October.

But who am I kidding?

We do have quite a few things going on in the next month. While we missed out on our usual September activities (Highland Games and Trail of Tears PowWow) and won’t be able to attend Cheekwood’s Dia de Los Muertos festival, we will have Little Man’s first real field trip (he gets to ride the bus and everything) to Roca Scary Farm (usually Roca Berry Farm, but it’s the Halloween season). The Mister, Baby Girl, and I will all get to go with him (though we are driving up ourselves) so I’m excited for that.

Then it’s homecoming week. Hopefully I can get some school spirit shirts before he needs them. They’re also doing an Adam Sandler day and I’m cracking up thinking about what that will be.

Little Man also wraps up popcorn sales, gets to attend Cub Scout Day of Awesomeness, and gets to go camping at Indian Cave State Park in October. He’s a busy little dude.

We close on our house October 22, Halloween is a day off of school and a Friday so we’ll actually get to go door to door trick or treating (boy do I need to get on it for costume ideas).

Whew. It’s going to be another month for the books.

Until then,

August 2025

Our first full month back in Nebraska is in the books!

It was a rough start. Getting here took a lot to recover from sleep-wise. We also had to muddle through the first half of the month with the Mister back in Clarksville for his VA appointments and the movers.

Our house finally went on the market. We’ve had several showings, so that’s a positive. It’s still a little bittersweet, but hopefully, it’s a fast sell so we can get started on our next chapter.

We tried to keep some normalcy with a Home Depot workshop. We also went to see Grammys and Gramps.

They were so excited to finally meet Baby Girl. And Little Man was, of course, excited to ride the Gator with Gramps and really liked showing Grammys the peppers and tomatoes.

Then, Little Man had his school open house and started kindergarten. I don’t know where time has gone!

Open House
Before school. Clearly a bit anxious.
A big smile at the end of the first day.

He was a little nervous going to school. He got sad and said he missed his house and his friend Nolan. But once he got to school and started talking to his teacher, he completely forgot we were there dropping him off. Thankfully, the Mister was back in Nebraska to walk with him. He really missed his daddy.

He has been working hard to ride his new (to him) big boy bike. He’s scraped his knees several times and swears he won’t ever ride it again, but we know better.

We added knee and elbow pads.

He also finally got his glasses. He rarely wears them (which is why I ordered the least expensive ones I could find) but he seems to enjoy them when he has to.

Baby Girl also had a big milestone accomplishment lately. She rolled from belly to back all on her own! She was mad as hell doing it, but she did it and has kept doing it.

I can’t believe how fast she’s growing up!

I have a hunch it won’t be long and she’ll be off and moving. If we can get her rolling back to belly, she can start sleeping on her side/belly which will definitely make her happier. She already rolls to her side almost immediately when I put her down for the night.

The rest of the month was a bit more low-key.  We celebrated both my parents’ birthdays and got to see Lindsey and Darrell a couple times.

We watched Husker football and volleyball on television.

Then, we tried out Sunny’s in Odell for soft serve. It’s this small shop that’s only open in the summer a few hours every week. They only have 2-4 flavors at any given time. The gentleman who runs it just does it for the community. It’s a cute little shop and was quite tasty.

Sprinkle cone!

In other, not fun news, we switched regions for Tricare so I’ll be scheduling Baby Girl for her 4 month appointment soon. This will be the first time any of us have seen a civilian provider away from a military installation basically since we got married, so I’m anxious to see how it goes.

Next month will bring picture day at school, parent-teacher conferences, and the official end to the Mister’s army career. We’re looking forward to what comes next and hopefully we will figure out some fun fall things to do in the next few weeks.

Until then,

July 2025

Whew! What a month!

Busy doesn’t begin to cover it. This mama is burnt out and running on fumes. It’s been a very trying, difficult month with a lot of changes in a very short amount of time.

We started the month with our favorite senior kitty’s 15th birthday.

Jack is still going strong and doesn’t show his age in the slightest.

We didn’t go out for the 4th of July — we weren’t feeling very festive and the neighborhood fireworks scared Roxie (bad enough she refused to go outside and when forced, she hid under the deck).

Baby Girl had a rough few weeks. Growth spurts are hard, and this mama thinks she has some silent reflux, making her extra miserable. She started to get congested and had a raspy voice from all the screaming between weeks 6 and 8.

Our poor girl was just miserable.

Then it was 2 month check-up and vaccines. As you can imagine, that was not her idea of a good time. We did convince the doctor to give us some meds for reflux to try, though she wasn’t very convinced that it’s reflux and tried to blame colic…*sigh* Poor baby let her banshee screaming speak for itself and we are testing out some Pepcid/famotidine.

Baby Girl now weighs 12lbs 7oz and is almost 23.5 inches long — that’s the 90-98th percentile. She’s giving her brother a run for his money in that department. Despite all the tummy issues, she is a growing girl.

The only silver lining with her check up struggles was that her first Imagination Library book from Miss Dolly arrived that day.

Another Miss Dolly book kid!

Little Man got enrolled in kindergarten (preschool was full) and had to have an eye exam where we found out he has astigmatism in both eyes and is a little bit far-sighted in one eye. He will be getting glasses for school work and tablet/computer time. He didn’t seem fazed at all by that. We’ll see when he actually gets his glasses.

Mid-month came and completely flipped the script. We did our last Clarksville Lowes project, picked up our last set of comics from Rick’s, and (finally) went to Children’s at Vanderbilt for Baby Girl’s audiology appointment.

Thankfully, the audiologist found that Baby Girl’s hearing is perfectly normal and she was not concerned in the slightest. Halle-freaking-lujah! The stress over this whole thing has been at the forefront of my mind since tge day after she was born.

It’s frustrating that it took so long (and we had to jump through so many hoops) to have someone actually take the time needed to get a proper test done. The audiologist was super patient with our fussy kiddo and was more than flexible to get an accurate result (we were given time to get her calm and sound asleep before even attempting to start testing).

We followed up with a phone appointment for Baby Girl on the 28th for her reflux. While the meds might be working, there’s still a lot of horrible screaming about once a day for an hour or two straight. The follow-up was a waste… They’re still convinced it’s colic. Which to me means they don’t want to take the time to dive any deeper into what could be going on. Yay, American health “care.” *eye roll*

Then, at the very end of the month, we packed up the kids and critters and began our move back to Nebraska. The movers are scheduled for the beginning of August and we’ll be putting our household goods in storage while we decide where we want to live. Until then, we will be living with my parents. It’s an adjustment, but we are excited for the next chapter being closer to part of our family.

These two are such good little riders.

It’s a mixed bag of emotions. We’re leaving behind our first house — one that was all ours. We brought both our babies home here, said goodbye to our sweet Audie boy here, celebrated so many holidays/birthdays here, brought Roxie home here…

But Clarksville doesn’t hold the same pull. Traffic has gotten astronomically worse, everything is more crowded, our routines have become monotonous and stale, we’re so far away from our families and most of our friends.

I’m sad to say goodbye to the special people we’ve come to know, but going home means precious time with part of our family that we weren’t getting being so far away.

That said, our whole world is being flipped upside down.

This is the first time in 21+ years the Mister will have a say in what comes next: work-wise, location-wise, choice-wise.

Little Man starts full-time school and we’ll have to see if he’ll still be able to do outside speech or if he’ll get it at school on its own. His routine is already shot with everything going on.

Baby Girl will only have to get used to the new surroundings since her world is still basically all mommy. Small blessing in that regard.

We’ll be missing out on some of our favorite pastimes in the coming months. No Highland Games or Trail of Tears PowWow, no Dia de Los Muertos festival at Cheekwood or Oktoberfest at Beachaven…I’m still trying to convince the Mister to let us go back to Clarksville for Santa photos with Bri and maybe make a weekend out of it so we can do Zoolumination too. We’ll see if that comes to fruition.

Whatever comes next, we’ll take it in stride (I hope).

Here’s to the coming new chapters.

Until then,

June 2025

Halfway through the year already, how is that possible?!

We’ve kept busy as usual, though we didn’t have a whole lot on the agenda.

Taz celebrated her 11th birthday with us.

How are all my cats seniors?!

Little Man had two weeks of swimming lessons and passed! He would have been able to go to the next level, but since he was too short to touch the bottom, we’ll have to wait for next year.

He was so much more confident this year.

Then he had his 5th birthday party. He had 3 classmates attend and thoroughly enjoyed the bounce house we rented for the day.

Sadly, my parents headed home after Little Man’s birthday. It’s been a rough couple of weeks getting used to our new routine without the help. Trying to haul both kids to Little Man’s speech appointments on time while not technically being able to drive/lift more than 10lbs was a challenge. Thankfully, I had healed enough to handle it…barely. Ha.

The following week, the Mister officially started his paternity/terminal leave for retirement.

After 21+ years, he’s (almost) officially done with Army life.

We’re still processing the latest major change, but it’s been nice having the Mister home without interruption. Especially since we need to start focusing on what comes next for our little clan — moving!

Later that week, Baby Girl had her spinal ultrasound at Children’s at Vanderbilt. Everything came back normal, so we don’t have to worry about her sacral dimple. Thank goodness.

We also saw an audiologist in Clarksville, but she wanted to send her to Children’s for a better screening. Honestly, it felt like this doctor didn’t want to take the time to try to get the reading and was just passing us along. Needless to say, it’s been a cause for a lot of extra stress on this mama. We are still trying to get her appointment scheduled with Vanderbilt, which is incredibly frustrating. They need a doctor’s order in addition to the authorization…which I can’t seem to get from post in a timely manner. Hopefully, we can get that scheduled soon.

We finally got our newborn photos back from Bri and they’re so precious!

We finished off the month with my 6 week postpartum appointment. How Baby Girl is already 6 weeks old is beyond me. It’s been such a haze of sleep deprivation, feeding, crying…on top of everything else, it sure doesn’t seem possible that almost 2 whole months have passed…or that I’ve recovered from my 2nd c-section.

July is going to be interesting. We have so much to accomplish in such little time. The Mister has scheduled movers to come pack/ship our household goods, Baby Girl has her 2 month vaccines/check up, Little Man will be wrapping up his last speech sessions in Tennessee, I scheduled an appointment with my PCM to renew my blood pressure medication, plus the 4th and Jack’s 15th birthday…it’s all very overwhelming.

My mom is flying down to help when we drive to Nebraska. I’m still not sure how we’re going to manage everything… I’ll be honest: I’m worried about how all our plans will shake out.

On one hand, I am so excited to be going back to the Midwest and closer to family. It will be amazing having them in the same area. I’m looking forward to being able to hang out with some of my oldest friends whenever I’d like and not have to worry about trying to fit in too short visits that are never enough.

On the other…I hate the uncertainty we’re facing. For the first time since we’ve been married, we don’t know what comes next. We don’t have our next place secured, we don’t have our healthcare sorted, and the Mister won’t have a job waiting for him or even any potential leads.

I’m sad to leave our first house behind — there’s so many memories here. Nevermind actually getting it sold. Our annual adventures will be sorely missed (the Highland Games, Dia de Los Muertos, Great  Spring Art Hop, Zoolumination); lord knows we’ll never find a better Santa for Christmas pictures or a better photographer. And I will miss all the wonderful friends I’ve made, even if I didn’t make enough time to spend with them while I was here.

While I know we’ll be fine, it’s a weird (albeit kind of scary) situation. Up-ending my whole family’s routine/life with no tangible plan is terrifying!  In the end, it’ll all be worth the stress. Putting down roots is going to be the next big adventure.

Until then,

May 2025

Oh boy, what a month!

May is always so busy, even without the excitement of adding a new baby to the family.

We started the month with the Home Depot workshop and the chaos continued from there.

I had several high-risk appointments and regular OB appointments during the first week of the month. Ah, the perks of being at the end of pregnancy.

At the OB appointment, we discussed the next steps. After doing the calculations based on my stats, my doctor came to the conclusion that trying to have a VBAC only had a 25% chance of being successful. That was disappointing news, but not entirely surprising as the high-risk provider measured Baby Girl likely to be 8lbs 2oz at birth.

So we opted to schedule another c section to avoid the complications and be a more controlled birth. It took a couple days to come around to the idea, but ultimately, it was a great relief. We scheduled for May 21.

The following weekend, we got to attend a Savannah Bananas baseball game in Nashville. It was such a fun experience, but there were entirely too many people (70,000 at Nissan Stadium) for my entirely too pregnant body. We had nosebleed seats so I was sure I’d go into labor just climbing all the stairs/ramps.

We were maybe 3 rows from the very top of the stadium.
Little Man was being silly.
Such a good photo of Little Man!
US Army Golden Knights parachute team
Dierks Bentley made a special appearance.

The next week was the last week of preschool.

We got Little Man’s birthday invites handed out and managed to make it through graduation.

Madison Street was so good for him. He got to do graduation even though we might do another year of preschool once we move.
He actually participated during the music program! He was singing and doing the actions.
So proud of this boy.
He will miss his teachers.
What a year it was!

Shortly after graduation wrapped up, I had an OB appointment on post. Unfortunately, my blood pressure was up so I needed to go for some monitoring and testing to check for sudden onset of pre-eclampsia.

The testing showed that my urine was just past the threshold for having too much protein in it (another worrying sign for pre-eclampsia to develop). It wasn’t enough to necessitate an immediate need for action, but…we had to move the c section date up to the following morning.

With a stroke of pure luck, the same surgeon and anesthesiologist who did Little Man’s c section were the ones to do Baby Girl’s as well. It made the whole thing a lot more comfortable for me for sure.

So May 16 at 9:12am, during a nasty thunderstorm, Baby Girl came screaming into this world – literally! She wailed the second the doctor pulled her out and has rarely been quiet since.

While the doctor was stitching me back up, the power went out in the OR. Thankfully, it didn’t take too long for the generator to kick on and the power was restored quickly. Still not as traumatic at Little Man’s birth.

My perfect girl weighed in at 8lbs 1oz and was 20 1/4 inches long.
Little Man is still a bit apprehensive about holding her but he is adjusting.

With the surgery falling on a Friday and having to stay until Sunday, the Mister and I had to miss out on Little Man’s Lowes project.

Luckily, Grandad was able to help him build.

What should have been a nice memory was somewhat ruined by another little boy being rude to him. Apparently, the boy thought Little Man was being too loud and got in his face asking why he was being so loud. My poor, tender-hearted boy took that personally and clammed up. From what Nana tells me, the other boy wasn’t reprimanded by his grown-up, which sadly doesn’t surprise me. My mama bear heart still doesn’t appreciate that. But, Little Man is resilient and got over it quickly. Nothing some Chick Fil A couldn’t fix and a trip to the hospital to meet his new sister didn’t hurt either.

The following weeks were a whirlwind of appointments and very little sleep for me. The Mister had to tote us around since I couldn’t lift the car seat (nothing over 10lbs is tough when your newborn is 8lbs worth!). Nana had to take Little Man to speech since I was also restricted from driving.

Baby Girl needed a referral for an ultrasound to check her sacral dimple (didn’t know that was a thing!) and since the nurses couldn’t get a good read on her hearing test, we also needed one for an audiologist. With the ultrasound, we’re running into issues with the doctor’s order, so it’s been a nightmare to get scheduled. The audiologist is able to get us in much sooner, so at least one thing can be checked off my to-do list.

As far as recovery is going, we’re both doing great. My incision has healed nicely and I’m back under my pre-pregnancy weight. Baby Girl has gotten back to and exceeded her birth weight. She has also mastered her latch so we were able to ditch the formula by day 2 (though it has come in handy for those many cluster feeds when I needed a break). At her 2 week check up, she weighed 8lbs 11oz which is a huge jump from the 7lbs 9oz she weighed when she left the hospital.

She really does look like Little Man. 🩷

Establishing a routine has been a challenge and will be even harder when Mom heads home after Little Man’s birthday party. I know we’ll manage, it’s just been a tough transition. Plus, we are still trying to go 1000mph and pack in everything we can, so adjusting to two little people is going to be extra fun.

We managed to get to the Montgomery county fair one night so Little Man could do something special. He enjoyed himself and I was glad to be out of the house even though I am exhausted (and was hurting big time!).

We also snuck in some newborn photos. I’m so anxious to see them – Bri knocked the sets out of the park. They were just perfect! And Baby Girl is a champ for sessions.

June is going to be a bit more low-key. Apart from Little Man’s birthday, I have nothing planned or scheduled other than my 6 week postpartum appointment and Indie’s vet appointment. Oh, and Little Man has swimming lessons the first 2 weeks.

I’m hopeful the weather cooperates for Little Man’s birthday party. We are renting a special bounce house and a handful of his classmates are coming. I really want him to be reminded how special he is since it feels like he’s feeling left out (maybe that’s just me being hard on myself – he’s getting a ton of Nana and Daddy time and doesn’t seem too bothered by his lack of Mommy time).

I’m also hoping to be able to get some of my house in order so we can start packing for our move in July, but that seems so far away and with Baby Girl’s feeding schedule, I’m more than happy just to soak in all the newborn goodness. We’ll see how that pans out…

Until then,

April 2025

Whew, what a month!

We kicked off April with Hina’s 12th birthday.

She loves the new toys.

Then we attended Little Man’s Kindergarten Kickoff.

He enjoyed the scavenger hunt to see the rooms. His favorite was the gym (of course).
The part he most enjoyed was jumping out of the back of the school bus.

I celebrated my 37th birthday even though the Mister had staff duty. It was low key and we got to enjoy some Blackhorse Pub the following afternoon.

We continued with a month full of weekly MFM appointments for Baby Girl, with lots of other yearly visits sprinkled in (dentist and eye doctor).

On one visit, we were surprised with a 3D scan and she really looks like Little Man! She has his lips/nose. Usually, I don’t care for the 3D looks, but this one actually looks pretty nice.

Baby Girl was measuring 5lbs 14oz and in the 72nd percentile at her latest growth scan. She’s marching right along and at this rate, they’re predicting she’ll be 8lbs 2oz at birth. I am hoping not to have another c section this time, but we will see how it plays out. I will know more at my OB appointment on the 8th, fingers crossed.

Then we took on Easter weekend.

We had the egg hunt and family picnic at Little Man’s preschool.

How cute are those milk jug baskets?! Our family supplied like half of them (what can I say? We go through a lot of milk).
Yes, he’s a short king.

This year, they didn’t let the kids keep the eggs so it was a learning curve. Little Man wasn’t sure why the eggs were all empty and kept putting them back down, so he only ended up with 4. We had to explain that he’d get a prize no matter how many eggs he found, but he still had a tough time with the concept.

We made up for the confusion with our yearly visit to Cheekwood for the Great Spring Art Hop. He was able to participate in 2 egg hunts and we found all the painted bunnies except one — which is a running theme for us. The weather was almost perfect, just a little hot and we took it nice and slow.

He didn’t hesitate to keep the eggs in his basket this time.
Trying to do a selfie with one of the bunnies.
His favorite this year.
My favorite this year.

Then we dyed eggs and had our own egg hunt in the backyard for Easter Sunday. The Easter bunny left a note for where to find his basket (daddy had that brilliant idea and Little Man loved it).

We tried using regular crayons before the dye. It didn’t work out too bad, and we learned we have to be careful or the shells will crack when dropped.
Even Roxie’s digging made for great hiding spots.
His big egg had a note from the Bunny and his basket was ready for him on his bed, full of Super Mario goodies.

To wrap up the busy month, we attended the Month of the Military Child Kidsfest on post. We normally don’t go, but it was a beautiful day and I am feeling the time crunch for us to go out as just a family of 3.

Little Man enjoyed the giant slide and bounce houses.
Checking out the inside of a Chinook.
First solo carousel ride.

It’s definitely been an exhausting month and I struggled (ok, I am STILL struggling) with getting absolutely anything done/ready for baby.  Even with only 3-4 more weeks, it still isn’t hitting me. All that countdown is making me is overwhelmed to the point that I simply do nothing and can justify it because I’m sore and huge at this point.

I did manage to get a handful of absolutely must-dos checked off, like baby laundry washed/folded and the carseat base installed and Little Man’s seat moved over to the back passenger side (which may or may not have made me emotional — I know, weird!). I even picked out take-home outfits for Baby Girl and put them in the hospital bag. It’s really a task that should only take 10 minutes, but for some reason, I can’t even do that.

At any rate, May is practically here and there’s still a handful of things going on before Baby Girl makes her big entrance.

Roxie will have her annual vet appointment, Mother’s Day is right there too. We are looking forward to the Savannah Bananas baseball game in Nashville (even if our tickets are in the nosebleeds). And Little Man will have his preschool graduation.

Hopefully by then, we will know more about whether or not we’ll be inducing (which I thought was the plan, but won’t know until the OB appointment the 8th). Time just keeps marching right along.

Until then,

March 2025

Busy month with no planned excursions to speak of!

It’s just been a month of doctor visits upon doctor visits and little else.

Kicked off the month with the Home Depot workshop. Little Man made a cool basketball hoop!

Then, it was labs and OB appointment on post. Apparently, I just missed the cut-off for my glucose test numbers, so I had to schedule a 3 hour test. Needless to say, I wasn’t thrilled.

Thankfully, I passed the 3 hour test without incident. It was just a long boring morning with too many needle sticks. At least I don’t have gestational diabetes! Huzzah.

We rolled into the following week with spring break and our Lowes workshop.

Then, we made a surprise trip to Danville, IL to watch Grandad’s basketball team play their first game in the NJCAA D2 National Tournament.

While they didn’t win and we could only stay for one game, we were still glad to be able to see Nana and Grandad and Little Man enjoyed his first live basketball game. Very much a full circle moment for me.

We capped off the month with our high-risk appointment, a birthday party, and Little Man went to the dentist for his check-up.

Baby Girl is growing right along. She’s measuring in the 59th percentile and is weighing in at 3lbs 12oz. She had a little excess fluid in one of her kidneys, but the nurse reviewing her ultrasound thought that it was likely she just hadn’t emptied her bladder at the time of the scan. Regardless, we start weekly scans in April, so we’ll circle back to that then to see if there’s anything to worry about.

Little Man got invited to his best friend Nolan’s birthday at Chuck E. Cheese. Unfortunately, the Mister had staff duty and couldn’t join us. Still, I think he enjoyed himself. He especially enjoyed the Luigi’s Mansion and Plants vs. Zombies games.

Happy Birthday Nolan!

For me, it was a very bittersweet day. I know no matter where we end up after retirement, these boys won’t be in school together much longer.

Little Man’s preschool teacher suggested he have one more year of preschool before heading off to kindergarten. Not because he isn’t smart enough, but because she thought socially and emotionally, he’d be more prepared if we waited. She doesn’t want him to fall through the cracks and start disliking school. The Mister and I are definitely taking that into consideration since he will really be a super young 5 year old in the fall. It will be an easier decision when we know where we will be for sure. Lots to decide!

We rounded out the month with a dental check-up for Little Man. He did great. No cavities and zero concerns from his dentist. Hallelujah he has lots of space for when he starts losing teeth!

April is going to be a very VERY busy month. I redid my dry erase calendar and boy, am I a glutton for punishment. I seem to have booked back to back to back appointments for various things. As I mentioned, we start weekly high-risk appointments on the 8th; there’s a regular OB appointment on my birthday; I scheduled dentist and eye doctor appointments for myself during the week I have tons to do.

Little Man has his egg hunt and family picnic at school, Kindergarten Kickoff at the elementary school we are zoned for (figured it couldn’t hurt to go check things out), and his usual Lowes/Home Depot workshops. We have tickets for the Great Spring Art Hop at Cheekwood again – fingers crossed we have nice weather for it! We should be getting his spring school pictures back very soon.

I seem to forget I am 31, going on 32 weeks pregnant and think I can book all the things. I even have stuff for May scheduled because I’m a little too ambitious.  But, it’s what we do. Go go go.

Until then!
